GCDA had coordinated the
comprehensive study on the transport systems for Cochin by M/s.RITEs. They have
recommended introduction of MRTS for Cochin. As the major share of trips
undertaken in Kochin make use of public transport system.
M/s.RITEs have thus proposed a
mass transit system called the metro rail ie, an elevated rail system pillars.
This is expected to reduce the travel time to the city centre and also reduce
the volum of vehicles in major city corridor as the major portion of passenger
are likely to shift to the metro rail. This will reduce travel time and at the
same time increase comfort. The alignment chosen for this project is starting
from Aluva coming through the NH 47 passing through the old NH from Edappally,
then Banerji road , MG Road coming to the south railway station road and meeting
Sahodaran Ayyappan Road and then finally reaching Tripunithura through the
S.A.Road and Tripunithura-Vytilla Road.
